Miami University Hughes and Pearson Halls

HEAPY provided Mechanical-Electrical design services for this phased project over approximately four years. Renovation will take place in teaching and research labs, offices, common areas, MEP and Fire Protection, and circulation spaces.

Hughes and Pearson Halls house Miami University’s Biology and Microbiology departments. In order to adapt and attract new faculty and students, the University decided on a combined 132,000 SF renovation for the outdated halls.

The Pearson Hall renovation will consist of 95,000 SF of renovated classrooms, active learning spaces, student study, and collaboration areas as well as teaching and research laboratories.

The Hughes Hall renovation will consist of 37,000 SF of renovated space on both the second and third floors. Complete with renovated research labs, teaching classrooms, and collaboration space, Hughes Hall will serve as a swing space to house all Pearson Hall occupants while the hall’s renovation is under construction. After Pearson Hall’s completion, Hughes Hall will serve the University’s Biology and Science Engineering departments long term.

The full project constitutes about two-thirds of the building. Both phases include major HVAC upgrades. The HVAC system serving the research and teaching classroom spaces will be converted from a VAV system to a chilled beam HVAC system and heat recovery will be added to the hood exhaust system and to air handling units to capitalize on the energy savings.
