HEAPY provided comprehensive engineering design for the HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology systems for the Indianapolis Zoo’s new International Chimpanzee Complex, a best-in-class guest experience for this new species at the Zoo. With a habitat spanning two-thirds of the Zoo property, the goal of the project was to make a powerful and direct connection with visitors to inspire and encourage them to support the conservation of wild chimpanzees.
The project also included a new Global Center for Species Survival, as well as a renovated main entrance and Welcome Center with a transition space that increases capacity, encourages more visitor awareness and engagement, and inspires awe in people of all ages and backgrounds.
INNOVATION
Comfortable and healthy environments for the animals were top priorities, as well as safety and security for staff and visitors. Chimpanzees must have the ability to express a full range of natural behaviors, including travel, social choices, tool use, and expression of sophisticated mental abilities. Environmental controls and lighting were critical to support the chimpanzees in their new habitat, ensuring specific humidity, air temperature, and air exchange rates to support optimal health and wellness.
BUDGET & SCHEDULE ADHERENCE
The project began during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, requiring the team to pivot to collaboration in a remote and virtual environment. Our team worked closely with the entire project team and the owner to adapt to rapidly escalating costs for supplies and equipment, as well as extended lead times due to global supply chain interruptions. HEAPY worked with the general contractor’s subsidiary supplier to ensure more timely equipment delivery and alignment with design intent, which resulted in minimal construction delays and adherence to the project budget.
