Environmental Charter School
Cost $20,000,000
Size 52,500 SF
HEAPY is designing the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology systems for a $12,500,000 new charter school in Pittsburgh, PA. The four-story, 52,500 SF high school includes 18 specialty classrooms, including spaces for special education and support services, faculty planning and office space, a cafe, and kitchen facilities. The building’s permeable design allows for community space sharing while maintaining safety for learners and faculty members, with attention to collaborative and independent spaces for young adults.
SUSTAINABILITY & RESILIENT DESIGN
The project team prioritized energy-efficient design and carbon emission reductions from the start of project planning. Compared to a benchmark high school (EUI 77), the facility will perform at a target EUI of 14-20. The facility uses all electric appliances and equipment to reduce the combustion of fossil fuels. A 130 kw rooftop solar PV installation will help the facility achieve Net Zero by 2023. The facility is pursuing WELL Certification, Passive House Certification, RESET Air Certification, and LEED Certification.
In addition, the project will leverage 20% local minority business enterprises (10% WBE) to support community equity and economic development.
SMART BUILDING TECHNOLOGY
The Environmental Charter School will be a true SMART Building, leveraging a centralized operational technology network that will allow building systems (e.g., BAS, occupancy, security, elevator) to be viewed and managed from a single pane of glass.
