HEAPY is proud to announce that our team has received the prestigious ACEC Ohio Honor Award for our work on the Research Support Building (RSB) at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. This award recognizes HEAPY’s design process, which prioritized a clean, uncluttered aesthetic with abundant natural light and biophilic elements, as well as celebrates our commitment to engineering excellence, innovation, and sustainable design as well as collaboration and partnership.

The ACEC Ohio Engineering Excellence Awards Competition is an annual program that brings public recognition to Ohio’s engineering industry by spotlighting engineering projects that demonstrate a high degree of uniqueness, ingenuity, and value. This year, the event featured a keynote address by Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and over 200 industry professionals who gathered to recognize 25 exceptional projects, including the RSB.

NASA Glenn Research Center

The building stands out for its unique blend of efficiency, flexibility, and occupant wellness. It is more than just a facility; it is a symbol of sustainable development and engineering innovation. By providing a space for groundbreaking research and fostering public engagement with science and engineering, the building will inspire future generations and contribute to the ongoing advancement of the engineering profession.

One of the most striking features is the dining and cafeteria space, which extends perpendicularly from the main facility. The space boasts glass walls and a slat ceiling, requiring mechanical systems to be designed to be unseen and unheard. The HVAC’s return air ductwork was routed under the floor through a radiant heated slab, and additional flooring insulation was required to ensure occupant comfort year-round.

The success of the Research Support Building is a result of exceptional teamwork and collaboration with several key project partners: ASA Andrea Steele Architecture, Bialosky Cleveland, MKSK, TEN Arquitectos, TM Light, Cini-Little International, Inc., and The Walsh Group. Each partner brought their unique expertise to the table, ensuring the project met NASA’s high standards and our shared vision for a sustainable, high-performance facility.

HEAPY is honored to have played a pivotal role in this award-winning project and looks forward to continuing our mission of delivering high-performance, sustainable engineering solutions. Thank you to our incredible team and partners for making this achievement possible.
