The team at HEAPY is absolutely thrilled to share that our design for the expansion and renovation of Butler University’s Science Complex has earned the Merit Award for Engineering at the Indy Chamber Monumental Awards.

“Our team truly values our longstanding partnership with Butler University, because a collaborative approach is essential when executing a complex project. Winning the Merit Award for Engineering reflects our commitment to creating educational spaces that inspire and facilitate excellence, which is exactly what Butler University sought to achieve through the transformation of the Science Complex. I am so proud to see the University’s vision become reality.”

The Science Complex expansion and renovation was highly complex, transforming two older, existing buildings into a completely refreshed and expanded science complex. The project’s goal was to create a resilient and fully integrated facility that would stand the test of time. The design team created flexible spaces that can be adapted to new teaching and research needs, as well as evolving technologies.

HEAPY’s approach focused on creating a facility that’s not just functional, but also a beacon of modern teaching and research. The Butler University Science Complex now boasts everything from state-of-the-art classrooms to private study areas, a new library, and cutting-edge chemistry and research labs. Our engineers partnered with the architecture and interior design team to create common spaces that are as inviting as they are inspiring, featuring plenty of natural light and clean finishes.

One of the keys to our success? COLLABORATION.

“Butler University’s willingness to engage a complete project team to execute pre-planning at a high level allowed us to work hand-in-hand with the facility staff, design team, construction managers, contractors, and suppliers throughout design and construction. This partnership was crucial in nailing the best design solution, developing trust, and adding value to achieve outstanding results.”

BUDGET & SCHEDULE ADHERENCE

Early planning with the entire design-assist team played a crucial role in containing costs, helping to avoid temporary MEP systems and eliminate waste. The project employed prefabrication (23% of production hours) for many MEP utilities to reduce costs and on-site construction activities, resulting in decreased noise, improved safety, and minimized disruptions.

The project adhered to an ambitious timeline, while also allowing the university to offer a full curriculum throughout construction. To limit the impact on students and faculty, the project was meticulously phased over a four-year period. Collaboration with facilities staff and faculty, as well as responsiveness to their needs throughout the construction process, minimized disruptions and inconveniences.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Sustainability was a top priority. Our team repurposed existing structures and brought in sustainable design elements like enhanced roof insulation, high-efficiency glazing, and insulated frames. We’ve also included active chilled beams, laboratory exhaust energy recovery systems, enthalpy economizers, advanced BAS control sequences with lighting control, and energy-efficient LED lighting.

Although initially targeting LEED® Silver certification, the project team’s early emphasis on planning and coordination enabled them to exceed expectations and attain LEED® Gold certification while adhering to the owner’s budget.
