HEAPY is providing engineering design and field observation services for the renovation and new construction projects at Yellow Springs City School District, in Yellow Springs, Ohio. These include modernizing McKinney Middle School, Yellow Springs High School, and Mills Lawn Elementary to enhance infrastructure, sustainability, and learning environments.
MCKINNEY MIDDLE SCHOOL & YELLOW SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL
The Middle/High School spans 98,641 square feet, serving 400 students. The project involves replacing all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, and technology systems, along with targeted demolitions and additions. The Band Area, Tower, and “Shoebox” were demolished, while new student dining, classroom wings, a gym, and administrative spaces are being added. Designed as an all-electric facility to reduce carbon emissions, the project also includes pathways for future energy initiatives such as solar or wind and EV Charging.
Phased construction will maintain school operations, using temporary modular buildings. Careful coordination was required to reroute utilities before demolishing existing sections of the building.
MILLS LAWN ELEMENTARY
The elementary school spans 47,470 square feet, serving 200 students. Renovations include replacing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, along with fire suppression and technology upgrades. Structural improvements involve removing modular classrooms, upgrading the building envelope, and reconfiguring key spaces such as secure entry points and restrooms. While retaining its existing gas infrastructure, the design incorporates energy-efficient strategies aligned with those at the Middle/High School.
The Middle/High School follows Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) design standards, while Mills Lawn Elementary is funded through a Locally Funded Initiative (LFI), leading to some design differences. Both projects are in the pre-construction phase, with budgets approved and construction set to begin soon. HEAPY has designed flexible systems to support future sustainability initiatives.
HEAPY’s expertise is driving the transformation of Yellow Springs Schools, enhancing learning environments while meeting evolving energy and infrastructure needs.
