Washington-Centerville Woodbourne Library
The Woodbourne Library expansion and renovation was designed to meet the needs of library patrons now and in the future while retaining the mid-century modern elements that make the facility an architectural treasure.
The project redesigned the library to fit changing patron needs, including adding a creativity space, a quiet reading room, a Children’s Garden, and a Teen Room. At the community’s request for additional meeting space, the project includes a Community Room and five meeting rooms/quiet rooms, all available for free use by the public. Favorite library features were retained like ample shelving for the collection, an inviting Children’s Room with a storytime area, computer workstations, and browsing shelves.
The renovation revived the interior with four original works of art from local artists, and a colorful palette of new paint, carpet, and furnishings that complement the mid-century design of the building. Barriers and challenges for patrons were mitigated with expanded parking, a drive-up book return, and additional restrooms. In addition, the iconic sunscreen was restored to its original beauty.
One year after its grand re-opening, Woodbourne Library was recognized with an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for its design.
