Markets:

After the successful completion of a $125M building program in 2003, HEAPY was hired to provide the Mechanical-Electrical design for South-Western City Schools’ new building program. The $248M phased program included 13 new elementary schools that opened between 2014 and 2015 and renovations to two additional elementary buildings.

Key features of the new 13 elementary schools:

  • The schools, sized from 400, 520, and 600 students, deliver on the district’s value of an equitable educational experience for all students through similar floor plans and finishes.
  • Each elementary offers classroom groupings around an Extended Learning Areas (ELA) space. Four small group rooms also open onto the ELA, providing flexibility for a variety of uses such as tutoring, testing, and intervention. All include terrazzo in the lobbies and a wood floor
    in the gyms.
  • Various-sized spaces with both fixed and moveable furniture support differentiated instruction including large groups, small groups, individual testing, and online work,
    quiet reading and project-based activity.
  • Flexible, project lab space open to the corridor with operable glass walls, supporting expansion when needed and keeping things quiet when necessary.
  • Energy efficient building systems including daylighting, low flow plumbing fixtures, lighting and occupancy sensors.
  • Use of new technology systems supporting one-to-one student video streaming devices, Interactive projectors and document cameras located in all learning spaces – classrooms
    and ELAs and WiFi throughout.
