HEAPY provided MEP and fire protection system design services to completely renovate Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis’ Health Sciences and Dunlap facilities. The project improved HVAC systems, reduced energy usage, and brought more natural light into the building to improve the indoor environment. This multi-year project required careful and complex phasing in two facilities to ensure ongoing operations were maintained with minimal disruption. HEAPY collaborated closely with the entire project team, working outside normal business hours and adjusting design schedules to help the project stay on track.
Both buildings were renovated extensively to improve the exterior, including a modification of the southern elevation of the Health Sciences facility. In the central bay of Health Sciences, a new curtain wall from the third to fifth floors brings daylight into the facility and creates a point of interest to the southern façade. Additional balconies and openings allow for more natural light and exterior views, supporting occupant health and wellness. At Dunlap, a new brick façade with punched openings will unify the northeast side with the rest of the facility. Vertical glazing will introduce natural light into the interior as well.
A new $10 million state-of-the-art outpatient family medicine center on the first and second floor of Dunlap accommodates more than 60 providers while addressing patient needs. The 43,000 SF clinic supports residency programs for IU School of Medicine, the largest family medicine residency program in the state.
Engineering design included complete upgrade and replacement of mechanical and electrical systems, fire alarms and fire protection systems, and sanitary piping. HEAPY installed two new 65,000 CFM air handling units at each facility (four total) as a part of the first phase of converting the HVAC system from dual duct with electric heat to variable air volume with hot water heat.
