Indianapolis Airport Authority Stormwater & Deicing
HEAPY provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services for upgrades to emergency generators, as well as HVAC and plumbing systems, at the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) Hanna Avenue, Seerly Creek, and West Facilities.
The IAA maintains an infrastructure system of storage basins, conveyances, control structures and associated equipment to manage stormwater and deicing fluid runoff at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND). The system captures runoff from aircraft and airfield pavement and carries it to storage, and ultimately through the sewers for wastewater treatment.
FedEx’s $1.5 billion expansion to increase its capacity by 50% meant stormwater and deicing fluid runoff from airplanes had to be managed effectively and efficiently to maintain quality operations at the airport while protecting the local environment. The project involved millions of gallons of increased capacity, designing two tunnels under I-70, and a new lift station. Our team leveraged time-tested technologies, as well as innovative and sustainable design features.
Project scope included permit negotiation and approvals with all necessary agencies, including requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), as well as stormwater and deicing modeling.
