HEAPY provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, and technology design services for the modernization of the Indiana Army National Guard’s Aircraft Maintenance Hangar in Shelbyville. The upgraded facility supports UH-60 helicopter maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations, replacing a 45-year-old structure originally designed for smaller UH-1 aircraft. The project addresses critical space, safety, and utility limitations to meet the evolving needs of the Guard’s aviation mission.

The enhanced hangar design improves energy performance through zoned HVAC systems and upgraded building envelope features, reducing waste even during hangar door operations. Aviation-specific fire suppression and ventilation systems ensure compliance with federal and state safety requirements. Expanded storage capacity for six to nine UH-60 aircraft protects assets from weather and lightning exposure, while improved maintenance layouts and right-sized doors support safer workflows, reduce equipment damage, and increase operational throughput. Secure communications spaces, COMSEC storage, and full Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection compliance strengthen the facility’s security posture.

Located at the Shelbyville Armory, a central hub for aviation operations for the 38th Combat Aviation Brigade, the renovated facility connects directly to Himsel Army Airfield, which supports fixed-wing, rotary-wing, and unmanned aircraft operations. The modernization enhances the armory’s mission readiness and supports expanded training and aviation activity for years to come.
