Cincinnati Union Terminal

Project Overview

In 2019, one of our more notable projects was the feature story in Preservation Magazine. The renovation of Cincinnati Union Terminal is one of the largest preservation projects carried out [in the country] recently, and one of the most complex.

HEAPY designed the Mechanical-Electrical as well as the Fire Protection systems for the restoration and renovation of the $228 million, 85-year old National Historic Landmark. The renovation included the repair to exterior and interior structural damages and all new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, and data systems.

By installing modern HVAC systems, the building has become more sustainable. The building includes ice storage capable of cooling the building throughout the day and reducing peak electrical demand for significant energy savings. Miles of ductwork was strategically located throughout the building. Historic lighting fixtures were repaired or replaced. A mixture of incandescent and fluorescent bulbs was replaced mostly with LED bulbs that would increase energy efficiency. New data systems and fire alarms were introduced throughout the building.

This project has received the following awards:

  • Building Design + Construction Reconstruction Award
  • AIA Ohio Merit Award
  • Preservation Award of Merit
  • ENR Midwest Best Projects Merit Award
  • Ohio Concrete Project of the Year
