Cedarville University Lorne C. Scharnberg Business Center
Cost $32,000,000
Size 65,700 SF
HEAPY provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design for Cedarville University’s new Lorne C. Scharnberg Business Center, home to the School of Business Administration. Located beside Cedar Lake, this facility will offer stunning views and ample community space for students to gather and collaborate. New classrooms are the heart of this building, providing venues for world-class faculty to train students for marketplace success.
A 500-seat auditorium classroom — divisible into three smaller units — will expand the university’s ability to host special guest lecturers and large classes. The auditorium classroom features control lighting and partitions for multiple zones to provide increased flexibility and adaptable learning spaces.
Mechanical design included four (4) Rooftop Air Handling Units (155 tons and 69 VAV boxes total) with hot water reheat. A radiant floor system was added to the concrete, glass-enclosed lobby to improve occupant comfort and reduce energy consumption. Restroom facilities feature low-flow plumbing fixtures for optimized water efficiency. They have completely hands free electronics and equipment to protect occupant health and wellness.
The new space will feature a dedicated stock market investment center, large classrooms, expanded faculty offices and a banquet room with kitchens and storage. Included is a flexible dining space that can accommodate up to 600 people, or up to 800 when equipped with theatre-style seating. The first floor will have a designated space for the new Berry Center for Free Enterprise. The Center for the Advancement of Cybersecurity is now located on the second floor of the Scharnberg Business Center. This new contemporary space will spotlight the in-demand cyber program. It has already been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations by the National Security Administration. It is only one of 22 in the nation with this recognition.
The Center features offices for faculty fellows and for the center’s director; a cyber classroom for lab exercises and cyber team activities; research space for industry-sponsored research and senior design projects; and a collaboration area. It also has a beautiful glass-enclosed space and a veranda facing Cedar Lake for events such as alumni and industry partner receptions.
COLLABORATION
Leveraging latest 3D modeling software, we worked closely with the design team to reduce and eliminate any design conflicts. We collaborated with the architect to negotiate optimal building system design parameters. The MEP design adhered to the facility’s desired interior design and aesthetics.
