Case Western Reserve University – Cleveland Clinic
Cost 485,000 SF
Size $515,000,000
HEAPY provided LEED Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning services for the Sheila and Eric Samson Pavilion, a new 485,000 SF, five-story, $515 million healthcare education facility at Cleveland Clinic, built in partnership with Case Western Reserve University. HEAPY commissioned mechanical, electrical/lighting, plumbing, and building automation systems.
The facility brings together doctors, nurses, physician assistants, and dentists in a holistic, interprofessional education environment. The building is a technology-first, virtually paperless environment aimed at training students to navigate in a world of digital medical records and high-tech equipment. Spaces include medical and nursing classrooms, virtual learning and simulation environments, x-ray diagnostics, labs, administrative offices, study areas, library, food service, and mechanical and support spaces.
The project is LEED Gold Certified.
COLLABORATION
This collaborative space is shared equally by both Cleveland Clinic & Case Western Reserve University. Our team worked to integrate the goals for both institutions into our process, engaging with stakeholders to ensure that the final outcome supported multiple different goals and objectives. HEAPY is still supporting this project by assisting with commissioning new space fit-outs as the facility evolves.
ENSURING HIGH-PERFORMANCE
During construction, decisions were made that caused the building systems to deviate from their original design intent, which would have led to decreased performance. The commissioning team identified these deviations early on, and then worked with multiple team members to resolve the problem and ensure that the BAS was operating to meet and exceed the original design parameters.
COST CONTAINMENT
Our team identified 247 issues during construction, all of which were completely resolved and closed out prior to the end of the warranty phase. This prompt action and attention to detail allowed the owner to address any issues while still under warranty, avoiding unnecessary additional costs for repair and replacement of any faulty equipment.
