Our team is excited to celebrate Women in Construction Week™, also known as WIC Week, which runs March 5-11, 2023. WIC Week started in 1998 and celebrates and promotes the role of women in the construction industry. This year’s theme is “Many Paths, One Mission,” which highlights the different journeys women have taken toward the same goal: strengthening and amplifying the success of women in the construction industry.

HEAPY is proud to highlight the work of two inspiring colleagues who work in HEAPY Solutions, our Engineer Led Design-Build construction services company. Jessica Roseberry is a Construction Project Administrator, helping to keep projects organized by managing submittals, RFIs, and documentation, and also serving as a liaison between contractors, project managers, and design team members.

Nadya Bochenek is a Project Manager who focuses on making projects as easy as possible for clients by being their one stop for every aspect of construction management and execution. She ensures that projects proceed smoothly while managing contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure that projects stay on schedule and on budget.

Read on to learn more about their career paths and their hopes for the future.

JESSICA ROSEBERRY, CONSTRUCTION PROJECT ADMINISTRATOR

How has HEAPY supported your career and development?

The first thing HEAPY did to support my career was hiring me despite having been out of the workforce for so long and not having a background in the A|E|C industry.  After I was hired, my colleagues offered one-on-one and group training to help me understand my job duties and responsibilities within the HEAPY Solutions team.  They always offer help when needed or answer any questions I may have.  My supervisor regularly checks in to make sure the job position meets the expectations and goals I have, as well as monitoring my performance.

Training programs have been readily available to me in the construction management software we use daily. Regular WiE (Women in Engineering) meetings have been a great learning opportunity for career/personal development.

HEAPY is investing time and money into conscious leadership training for myself and other colleagues and is constantly looking for feedback on how they can improve and support colleague performance and success while maintaining life-work balance. Tell us about your path. How did you get where you are today?

I graduated from Wright State University with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training.  After I graduated, I took the national Board of Certification exam to become a Certified Athletic Trainer and became licensed in the state of Ohio. Shortly after that I accepted a job as an Athletic Trainer/ Medical Assistant for an Orthopedic Surgeon’s office where I worked for three years.  My husband’s job transferred our family out of state, and I then made the decision to take a career sabbatical to stay home and raise our children. After eight years and our youngest becoming school aged, I was anxious to figure out my next career move.

A job opening at HEAPY in Construction Project Administration became available. I didn’t have a background in engineering but had previously worked in a supportive role doing data entry and other administrative tasks, so I decided to apply for the position and the rest has been history!

NADYA BOCHENEK, PROJECT MANAGER

Tell us about your path. How did you get where you are today?

I started as a drafter at HEAPY, and when a position opened up for a field person I asked if I could do it. At first, there was a little push back, probably because I’m a woman and there had never been a woman in that position, but I persisted, learned the job, and worked very hard to earn the respect. After that, when the position at HEAPY Solutions opened up, I had great support from my colleagues. The skills I acquired in the field helped the transition to the construction side.

How do you support other women in their career in the A|E|C industry?

I love working with women in this industry and I would love to see more of us in the field. I like taking my colleagues to job sites so I can showcase all the exciting work we do.

How has HEAPY supported your career and development?

When HEAPY hired me, I was an interior designer helping with drafting and managing construction documents. Within HEAPY, I was able to grow and explore other possibilities that I didn’t even think I wanted or could do. HEAPY has always provided me with tools and mentorship to help me learn the skills needed for my next career step. HEAPY Solutions Nadya Bochenek Design-Build Construction Services

What work do you think needs to be done to make the construction industry a more attractive career path for young adults, especially women, looking at their future?

I think the construction industry needs to offer more site visits for students and young professionals. Take them to the job site and show them all the possibilities.
