The Building Commissioning Association (BCxA) has awarded HEAPY a 2024 Commissioning Excellence Award for our commissioning work on the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Critical Care Building. This groundbreaking pediatric healthcare facility sets new standards in patient care.
Spanning 768,000 square feet and featuring 249 new beds, this state-of-the-art building includes a central utility plant, emergency department, trauma rooms, intensive care units, and more. Our commissioning team ensured that every critical system – from mechanical, electrical, and plumbing to lighting, fire protection, and emergency generators – was optimized for safety, efficiency, and sustainability inside this $326 million facility.
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Critical Care Building Commissioning
Innovative & Resilient Pediatric Healthcare Systems
One of the most innovative features of the Critical Care Building is its use of spectral lighting. This cutting-edge technology was developed by Cincinnati Children’s researchers to support healthy sleep cycles and growth in newborns. Our team ensured that these lighting systems, along with hundreds of others, were thoroughly tested and optimized before opening.
In addition, the project added a new 12,000-square-foot central utility plant, which can run on two types of fuel. The plant was also built with additional capacity to serve as a backup for the entire hospital. This added layer of redundancy creates more resilient infrastructure in the event of an emergency.
During functional testing, the emergency generators underwent a rigorous real-world test when a campus-wide power outage occurred. The generators automatically kicked in and ran for over 30 hours, validating the reliability of the system.
