What are some of the most memorable projects of your career?
“It’s always satisfying to travel and see the projects I’ve worked on, knowing the role I played in making them happen. One of my favorite projects is the renovation of the historic Cincinnati Union Terminal. I’ve admired that building all my life, and having the opportunity to work on such a major renovation was truly special. It’s a building with so much history and turning it into a museum was the best thing that ever happened to it. Being part of preserving that history was incredibly meaningful.”
When it opened in 1933, Cincinnati Union Terminal was a groundbreaking rail station that united 13 different rail lines into a single hub. Originally designed by architects Alfred Fellheimer and Steward Wagner, the terminal at one time moved 17,000 passengers in a single day. It was later transformed into a mall and then a museum center. From 2016-2018, the facility shut down to undergo a $228 million renovation and restoration, restoring its iconic legacy and preserving its historic character for generations to come.
What advice would you give to other designers and engineers just starting their careers?
“Don’t corner yourself into just designing one type of project. Get to know the entire engineering field. Over the years, I’ve sought out opportunities to work on a variety of projects. It gave me opportunities to collaborate with a lot of different clients across the county, and we tackled really unique challenges together. This keeps me learning.”
Andy’s dedication to excellence and his ability to bring projects to life have made him a valued part of the HEAPY legacy. We look forward to seeing his work continue to inspire for decades to come.
