Memorable Projects and Career Milestones
A defining project that stands out to John O’Brien is the Chilled Water Plant at Butler University, which earned the Honor Award (first place) in the engineering category at the Indy Chamber Monumental Awards. This award-winning, energy-efficient design presented unique challenges and opportunities that made it especially memorable. The project involved modernizing an aging system that had been expanded over the years without considering the impact on the central plant. HEAPY resolved longstanding system inefficiencies by implementing pressure independent balancing control valves, which balanced chilled water flow across campus buildings and improved energy performance.
Additionally, advanced tools like BIM, AR, and 3D scanning were used to help the University visualize the final plant and streamline construction planning. This thoughtful approach reduced unknowns, minimized disruptions, and allowed Butler to redirect time and funding toward enhancing comfort and functionality throughout campus. For John, the project reflects the innovation, collaboration, and impact that define his career at HEAPY.
Another key client partnership that stands out to John is his long-standing work with Indiana University’s Data Center. Over the years, he has played a role in upgrading the university’s supercomputing infrastructure, ensuring its facilities remain
