HEAPY is providing comprehensive mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, life safety, and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) design services for the Indiana Air National Guard’s new Indoor Small Arms Qualification Range in Terre Haute. This purpose-built training facility supports firearms qualification and combat arms maintenance and includes all major building systems, site utilities, and exterior lighting.
The project includes HVAC design for the CATM (Combat Arms Training and Maintenance) building, site lighting for the perimeter and parking areas, and coordination of natural gas, electrical service, fiber-optic infrastructure, and ICT systems. Life safety design is performed in accordance with UFC 3-600-01 by a Qualified Fire Protection Engineer, and the project includes support for the Green Building Initiative (GBI) certification process.
The facility incorporates an 8,500-square-foot, 10-lane, 25-meter, fully contained indoor firing range and a 1,500-square-foot CATM area for weapons cleaning, maintenance, storage, administration, utilities, and restroom/shower facilities. The range supports weapons and ammunition with energy levels up to 2,500 foot-pounds, including handguns, 5.56mm rifles, and 7.62mm rifles.
Upon completion in spring 2027, the facility will allow nearly 900 Airmen to complete qualification requirements on base rather than traveling off site. It supports multiple units, including Security Forces and Civil Engineers, and enhances training capabilities by enabling low-visibility exercises and providing integrated classroom space for weapons familiarization and qualification.
This project represents the first purpose-built range at the Terre Haute Air National Guard Base since 1997 and marks a significant investment in operational readiness and long-term mission support.
