NKU University Center and Otto M. Budig Theater

HEAPY is providing electrical, fire protection, plumbing, and technology engineering design services for the renovation of NKU University Center and Otto M. Budig Theater. The scope also includes lighting and A/V design. The goal of the project is to relocate the Welcome Center, modernize the look and feel of the University Center, and upgrade the theater to integrate state-of-the-art A/V technology into the existing space. The project will also upgrade fire protection systems to ensure they meet current code requirements.
This $2 million project will relocate NKU’s Welcome Center inside the renovated University Center, which will be situated on the second floor. The Welcome Center will leverage nearby spaces using the existing ballroom and Otto M. Budig Theater. This facility is the first impression for many visiting families and prospective students, so mood and visual aesthetics are critical.
The renovated University Center will aim to make the building brighter, switching to ceiling and glass panes rather than cement walls. A wrap-around desk will be at the base of the staircase, where the Welcome Center staff will greet visiting families. The middle staircase will now feature artwork of a flame, which is lit from within using full-spectrum color-change (RGBW) LED lighting. Expanding from the second floor to the top of the building, the colorful flame creates a “wow” factor for visitors.
The lighting design will also make the atrium bright and inviting, featuring all-new LED lighting and controls. The space will include digital LCD displays throughout.
Inside the Otto M. Budig Theater, sound and video systems will be upgraded to improve projection clarity and sound fidelity. In addition, the new and upgraded technology systems will allow for adaptability and better user access and experience.
