City of Cincinnati Fire Station No. 35
Cost $5,400,000
Size 18,000 SF
HEAPY provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design and commissioning services to the new Fire Station No. 35 in Westwood, a state-of-the-art, 18,000 SF facility that replaces the cramped, 105-year-old station on Junietta Avenue.
The new station gives the fire department more than twice as much space and allows it to add a new medical unit and supervisor. Unlike the current station, it includes facilities for women, whose numbers in the Cincinnati Fire Department (CFD) continue to increase.
The design of the building while unique in character, incorporates materials that are consistent with the style of the surrounding community. There’s an extensive use of stone and brick on the exterior, and the roof is all metal construction. The durability of materials carries to the inside of the building since it is anticipated that this will be one of the busiest fire stations in the city of Cincinnati and is fully occupied 24/7. The design of the fire station incorporates sustainable features that focus on energy efficiency and low, long-term operating costs.
While the building was not designed for LEED certification, the design team used the USGBC LEED guide for New Construction and Major Renovations as a guideline. The project includes geothermal water source heat pumps for heating and cooling, natural ventilation in the apparatus bays, water efficient landscaping, and controlled use of natural day lighting.
