HEAPY provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology engineering design, as well as commissioning services, for the $50 million addition and renovation of Playhouse in the Park, located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The new design fully embraces its leafy surroundings, while adding a new Mainstage Theatre Complex to replace the existing Robert S. Marx Theatre. An outdoor plaza and a new entry were also added to the site design.
The rebuilt theater features a new and more intimate mainstage theatre, enhanced backstage facilities, more comfort for the audience, and better acoustics. The addition includes improved stage technology and enhanced patron experience with more seating (537 total), legroom, acoustics, and sightlines.
The theatre also gained a revamped costume shop, a crew lounge, a new green room, and new cast dressing rooms. The entire backstage area, as well as the front of the house and performance space, were redesigned to be ADA-accessible.
New catwalks and a cutting-edge fly gallery above the mainstage allow producers to create and move more ambitious stage sets. New expansive trap areas underneath the stage are a game changer for more creative set transitions, design, and technology integration.
