Ball State University Performing Arts Center

Project Detail:

Cost $24,600,000

Size 171,534 SF

HEAPY is engaged to provide comprehensive engineering design services for Ball State University’s multi-facility renovation of the Hargraves Music Building (64,350 SF), Arts & Communication Building (76,627 SF), and University Theatre (30,557 SF). These three buildings are part of a larger complex that was constructed in four separate construction phases built between 1956 and 1963. The complex is located on campus at the northeast corner of McKinley and Riverside Avenues. It is anticipated that a 20,000 SF addition to the building will also be part of the project. The facilities shall be created to fully accommodate and engage students and promote collaboration and innovation in the performing and creative arts.

The project will include replacement and upgrades to major mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as roof replacement. Work will involve ADA compliance, addressing water infiltration at the south entrance of the Arts & Communication building, reconfiguring spaces to better suit current and proposed future use, updating finishes, addressing acoustical deficiencies, and adding a fire suppression system. Sound control will be required for practice or performance rooms/areas.

The project will be completed in phases to allow for ongoing operations during construction, require careful coordination between user groups, the design team, and the construction manager.
