HEAPY is honored to be recognized by Building Design + Construction (BD+C) Magazine as the #3 engineering firm serving the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Since the early 1970s, HEAPY has completed over 900 projects. This recognition reflects our ongoing dedication to supporting high-performance healthcare environments for veterans and their families.

One notable project that demonstrates our commitment is at the Dayton VA Medical Center, where HEAPY was part of a team that designed a $55.6 million infrastructure upgrade to prepare the facility for the federal Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM). To meet the demands of this transition, the facility required a comprehensive refresh of its IT backbone infrastructure, including upgrades to IT closets and equipment across campus. A key challenge involved assessing aging underground infrastructure, which required locating existing conduits and cabling. To overcome this, our team created a simple but effective tool using a GoPro, flashlights, and a painter’s pole, allowing us to safely document each underground telecommunications vault. This low-tech approach uncovered essential information that informed our design decisions, enabled seamless implementation with zero change orders, and led to additional project opportunities.

In addition to innovation, HEAPY reflects a long-standing commitment to supporting the VA’s mission, not only through engineering services but also by fostering strong partnerships with service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses (SDVOSBs). As a trusted advisor to the VA and an active participant in the Small Business Administration’s Mentor-Protégé Program, we work alongside an SDVOSB firm to enhance technical capabilities, share industry knowledge, and support economic growth in the communities the VA serves.

Together with our protégé firm, we’ve completed over 100 projects, including infrastructure assessments, master planning, boiler replacements, chilled water and steam line upgrades, fire alarm and electrical system upgrades, and comprehensive interior and exterior renovations at VA campuses across the country.

We’re proud to play a role in helping fulfill the promise to care for those who have served in our nation’s military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors, and we remain committed to supporting this mission with every project we take on.
