For three decades, Doug Sales has brought curiosity, empathy, and engineering excellence to every project and team he has touched. From iconic buildings to regional leadership, Doug’s career reflects not only technical skill, but a deep care for clients, colleagues, and outcomes.
Q: How do you leverage your strengths and skills for success in your role?
Decades of experience bring the ability to anticipate questions and project needs. That kind of experience helps keep projects moving and allows me to guide the team more effectively. A big part of it is also empathy. I intentionally try to see things from the other person’s point of view—whether it’s a client or a teammate. When people feel like you’re truly looking out for them, that builds trust. And trust is what drives good communication and successful outcomes.
Q: Can you share a defining moment, achievement, or a favorite project in your career at HEAPY?
Two moments stand out. The first is the Schuster Performing Arts Center. That project was unlike anything I had worked on before. The architecture was bold and complex, and the mechanical systems had to align with that vision. It was a real challenge, but incredibly rewarding.
The second is when I relocated to help start up our Raleigh office. That move pushed me to use everything I had learned over the years—and to pick up some new skills along the way. It was a culmination of my experience and a real growth opportunity.
Q: What has kept you motivated and passionate about your work at HEAPY for 30 years?
It’s the joy clients show when they see their project come to life. We’re used to the process, but when you watch their excitement and pride in what we’ve helped create, it’s incredibly rewarding. That energy reminds me why this work matters.
Q: How do you foster a collaborative environment within your team and ensure successful projects?
Again, it comes down to seeing things from the other person’s perspective. Whether it’s a teammate or a client, being intentional about understanding their point of view helps me respond more effectively and build better relationships. When people feel heard and understood, they’re more engaged. This mindset, looking out for each other, naturally leads to stronger collaboration.
