The Indiana University (IU) Indianapolis Health Sciences and Dunlap renovation project was recognized with a 2024 Indy Chamber Monumental Achievement Award – Engineering Category.

Working closely with IU and arcDESIGN, HEAPY transformed a former hospital into a modern health sciences education hub. The project benefits both students and the surrounding community. This adaptive reuse project created a new space for healthcare education and community health services, with a new outpatient medical clinic now located on the first floor.

“The Health Sciences and Dunlap transformation allows Indiana University to train students for in-demand jobs while also providing meaningful healthcare services for citizens. It’s a win-win for the community and the local economy,” said Amanda Doenges, Practice Director for the education market at HEAPY.

Innovative Solutions for Complex Health Science Spaces

The IU Health Sciences and Dunlap renovation was no small feat. This project involved major updates to the mechanical, electrical, and fire protection systems to meet the needs of a high-tech educational space.

HEAPY installed new air handling units and an efficient HVAC system with variable air volume controls. This system will reduce energy use and ongoing operational costs.

Inspiring Spaces for the Community

HEAPY IU Indianapolis Health Sciences DunlapThis renovation also created a new IU Health Primary Care – Indianapolis medical office, located on the first and second floor of the Dunlap Building. The new office offers primary care services for the whole family, including wellness and preventative screenings, nutritional counseling, obstetrics, pediatrics, diabetes management, and behavioral health.

Now, residents have better access to quality healthcare close to home. In addition, IU medical students benefit from hands-on experience in a real clinical setting.

Collaboration to Improve Outcomes

The renovation of the IU Indianapolis Health Sciences and Dunlap took careful planning and collaboration from start to finish.

With two connected buildings and multiple floors to upgrade, each phase was meticulously planned and timed. HEAPY took a unique approach to upgrade the building infrastructure. It started from the roof and moved down one floor at a time.

Old systems continued to operate at ground level while new systems were installed and gradually phased in. Over the course of three years, construction proceeded floor-by-floor. This phased approach allowed the building to continue operations and minimized disruptions.

A big thank you to Indiana University, arcDESIGN, ARSEE Engineers, and Design 27 for partnering with us to make this award-winning project a success!
