As buildings, campuses, and entire communities transition toward electrification, the choices we make today will define tomorrow’s resilience, efficiency, and sustainability. This session explores the critical steps to prepare for an electrified future—from infrastructure readiness and grid considerations to system design and funding opportunities. Learn how electrification can reduce carbon emissions, improve operational performance, and position organizations for long-term success in an evolving energy landscape.

In today’s competitive marketplace, significant capital expenditure decisions can make or break a healthcare organization and the career of the executive(s) tasked with such decisions. No capital decision may be greater than the construction of a new facility or the substantial renovation of an existing one. After years of relative dormancy, the healthcare construction boom continues throughout the U.S. for a variety of reasons, many of which impact both small community hospitals and large urban health systems alike.
The most common reasons for the renovations, expansions, and replacements include aging facilities, population growth, market demand, and the need to improve operational efficiencies. Additionally, competition moves organizations to incorporate the latest advances in care delivery, medical technology, new building codes and healing design elements to enhance the patient’s experience through the surrounding environment. Changes in building codes and patient safety standards also drive the need for construction and modification.

The need for climate action is increasingly evident: the built environment accounts for up to 40% of Greenhouse Gas Emissions. As a result, Architects and Engineers have a responsibility and opportunity to reduce this impact through their designs. To address this responsibility, three recent industry-wide frameworks have been developed: AIA2030, MEP2040 and SE2050. These voluntary commitments are an important part of reducing the carbon footprint of the built environment with goals to reach Net-Zero Whole Life Carbon in buildings. Join signatories of each of these three commitments as they dive into the specifics of each commitment and walk attendees through their companies’ plans for achieving Net-Zero Whole Life Carbon in their designs. Our panelists will also highlight how these frameworks encourage cooperation, idea sharing, and partnership opportunities amongst the broader industry.

Buildings are not static—they evolve from concept to occupancy and through multiple retrofits over their lifetime. Each stage presents opportunities to improve sustainability, energy efficiency, and resiliency. This session explores how owners and design teams can leverage emerging tools such as integrated project delivery, early simulation, data-driven commissioning, fault detection and diagnostics, and digital twins to optimize performance across the building life cycle. Panelists from HEAPY and Cyclone will share real-world approaches to infrastructure planning, ongoing monitoring, and strategic decarbonization, highlighting how data can drive smarter business and operational decisions. Attendees will gain actionable insights into aligning sustainability goals with financial and operational priorities, ensuring buildings remain resilient and future ready.

Preparing for an unplanned or unexpected event, such as a natural disaster, pandemic, civil disturbances, medical error, or labor disputes (e.g., union labor) causes physical, psychological and emotional stresses that can overwhelm employees, medical staff, patients and communities. In the event of a crisis, the quality and efficiency of care delivery may be challenged and typically takes a toll on every part of the organization. Lack of the unknown or uncertainty is also a challenge that healthcare leaders face in the time of crisis. Healthcare leaders need to understand ways to prepare their organization for unforeseen circumstances, which includes developing a communication plan, managing organizational resources, such as medical supplies, levels of patient care and leveraging local and state resources and funding.
This panel discussion will provide insight and perspectives on ways to manage an unforeseen crisis within the healthcare organization and its community. It will include how healthcare leaders can better prepare and respond to a community or healthcare crisis, health surge event, or unanticipated response.
