AIA Ohio Valley Conference

The Dayton Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) will be hosting the Ohio Valley AIA Regional Convention from September 15 thru the 17th.  The event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the Dayton Convention Center in downtown Dayton, Ohio.

Heapy Engineering's Director of Sustainable Design, Michael Berning, and Ryan Hoffman, Energy Services Manager will both be speaking at the conference.  Michael Berning, PE, CEM, LEED AP BD+C will be co-presenting on Thursday in a panel session entitled, "Do LEED buildings Actually Perform After Receiving Their LEED Plaque?"  His co-presenters will include: Dan Papay the University Engineer at Wright State University and Mark Setterlin of RW Setterlin Building Company.  Ryan Hoffman, CEM, BEAP, LEED AP BD+C will be co-presenting with Michael on Saturday in a session entitled, "LEED Platinum Requires Behavioral Change - Not Chasing More LEED Points."

Rick is the President of Heapy Engineering.  He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio Northern University and is a member of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers) and serves on the ASHRAE TC 9.9 Mission Critical Facilities Committee and as a liaison to SSPC 90.1.  At the ASHRAE 2009 Conference in Chicago, IL, Rick co-authored “Pioneering Use of Evacuated Tube Solar Collectors and Early Direct Digital Control Systems.” In addition, Rick is a member of NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers) and AEE (Association of Energy Engineers, Dayton Chapter).  Rick is also a contributing author of Book 10 ASHRAE Datacom Series.

Darryl McClelland, LEED AP BD+C, Heapy Engineering, Dayton, OH

Darryll is a BIM and Virtual Design Manager/Project Coordinator with Heapy Engineering.  He has a BS from Purdue University and over 25 years of experience in the engineering industry.  Currently, he oversees the BIM process at Heapy Engineering focusing on the integration of BIM software into the engineering design processes.  Darryl has also co-authored four nationally published books centered on the BIM process. Those books are, The Aubin Academy Master Series: AutoCAD MEP 2012, The Aubin Academy Master Series: Revit MEP 2011, The Aubin Academy Master Series: AutoCAD MEP 2011, and Mastering AutoCAD MEP 2010.

Heapy Engineering is pleased to announce Mark MacCracken, the US Green Building Council's Chairman of the Board of Directors as this year's Keynote Speaker.  Mark will be providing attendees with his insight into the future of sustainability in the A/E/C industry.

Mark, PE, LEED AP, is the CEO of CALMAC Manufacturing Corporation which is the largest manufacturer of Thermal Energy Storage Equipment in the world.  He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and three U.S. Patents.  He is: the Chairman of ARI's Thermal Energy Storage Section, former Chairman of ASHRAE's Thermal Storage Technical Committee and an active member of the International District Energy Association and the Alliance to Save Energy.

Government Panelists will provide their perspective on what is happening regionally and nationally regarding sustainability in their respective organizations.  This will include their "green" initiatives, challenges, and future projects.  
 
Panelists:

Mr. Kevin Hill, LEED AP, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH. 

Kevin is a registered architect with the 88 Air Base Wing/ Civil Engineering Directorate at Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB).  He was the Air Force Project Manager for the first LEED certified project at WPAFB, The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) new Academic Building- LEED Silver.  He is currently the Air Force Program Manager for the $239 million Human Performance Wing BRAC MILCON program. 

He holds a B.A. in Architecture from Miami University and a Master of Architecture from the University of Maryland.  Mr. Hill is a member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) and sits on the City of Oakwood Board of Zoning Appeals.
 
Mr. Timothy Flynn, CEM, CMVP, Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indianapolis IN and the Illiana VA Medical Center in Danville IL.

Tim is an Energy Engineer for the Veterans Administration and has over ten years of experience in energy management in heavy industry, K-12 education and healthcare.
 
Mr. Flynn is currently developing projects using ground-source heat pumps, wind powered turbines, high efficiency chillers and advanced building automation for the VA. He has extensive experience in operational efficiencies/ low-cost savings initiatives. Tim is a member of a comprehensive energy management team that has performed Level II  building energy audits for eight VA Medical Centers totaling over eight million SF. This team developed the standards and procedures for the Self-Audit process for the Energy Management Program throughout the entire Veterans Administration.
 
Mr. Flynn is a 1985 graduate of Purdue University. Tim and his family make their home in Greenwood, Indiana.

Ms. Lamees Mubaslat, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Montgomery County Administrative Services, Dayton, OH

Lamees is an Architect, Project Manager, and Sustainability Coordinator for the Montgomery County Planning and Construction department.  She has designed, directed, and administered over 100 capital improvement projects ranging from large multiple use projects to small tenant improvements and is currently responsible for the County’s sustainability efforts.  Lamees currently works with the Dayton Regional Green 3 task force to promote greener government, businesses, and personal practices throughout Montgomery County and the Dayton region.

Mr. Steven O'Hara, P.E.
Senior Regional Military Construction Engineer U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
, Great Lakes and Ohio River Division

Steve joined the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division of the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2007.  He is responsible for the execution of the Military Construction Programs and is the command's representative for the implementation of Energy and Sustainability initiatives in the Great Lakes and Ohio River region. Prior to working with the Corps of Engineers, Mr. O'Hara has worked with Columbia Sussex Corporation, Bechtel Construction, and was an Officer in the United States Navy's Civil Engineer Corps.

Mr. O'Hara has a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky and is a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

On June 23, 2011 Michael Berning along with co-panelists; Mark Setterlin, Setterlin Building Company and Dan Papay, Wright State University, will be speaking at the Greening the Heartland Conference.  Their session is entitled, Post LEED?  What about Building performance after the Plaque?

The Conference, hosted by the US Green Building Council Cincinnati Chapter, will run from June 22nd to the 24th in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Heapy Engineering is also a Sponsor of the Cincinnati Zoo Tour, which will be held in the evening on June 23.  The Cincinnati Zoo, which is considered to be "the nation's most sustainable zoo" features a Windspire wind turbine, bioretention cells, and the largest urban, Solar Cell Array accessible to the public.

Symposium on Sustainability in Health Care (SSHC)

On April 21, 2011, Heapy Engineering and Wright State University will co-host the Symposium on Sustainability in Health Care, which will be a half-day education and networking event for the Health Care industry.  This event will feature nationally, renowned Health Care sustainability expert, Gail Vittori, as the keynote speaker.
 

The Symposium will be held on the campus of Wright State University in the Student Union Conference Center.  The Symposium will begin with a keynote luncheon followed by panel discussions highlighting regional and national experts on Health Care delivery, operations and management – all with a focus on: “How should Sustainability be integrated within the delivery of Health Care?”  A Trade Expo with exhibitors focusing on services, materials, products, equipment, etc. associated with the Health Care industry will run concurrent with the Symposium. 


Senior health care administrators, medical practitioners, building design and construction professionals, nursing and clinical staff, medical students and educators, environmental health and safety personnel and health care facility managers should all attend.

 

These sessions are approved for GBCI CE Hours.

Gail Vittori is a Co-Director for the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, a non-profit design firm dedicated to sustainable planning and design.  Gail collaborated on the American Society of Health Care Engineering's Green Health Care Construction Guidance Statement and the Green Guide for Health Care.  She is also the founding Chair of the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® for Health Care Core Committee and a former Chair of the USGBC Board of Directors.

Erik Anderson, AIA, LEED AP, HOK, Inc. - As a design professional for HOK's International Health Care Division, Erik has led the effort on transformational projects for prominent academic medical centers and large health care systems.  He is currently leading the design effort on the Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis, a 1.3 million SF health care facility that will create a new campus of LEED Silver certified buildings.  In addition, he also led the efforts on the LEED Platinum Wellmark Headquarters in Des Moines, IA and the LEED Gold College of DuPage Health Sciences Center in Glen Ellyn, IL.  Erik's designs have also been feature in Healthcare Design Magazine and Architectural Record's online publication.

Debbie Harden, Christ Hospital - Christ Hospital is the nation's first hospital to be LEED Certified under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance rating system.  In addition, their newly completed Imaging Center received LEED Silver under the Commercial Interiors rating system.  Assisting with the leadership of the "Green Team" at Christ Hospital, Ms Harden has bee instrumental in establishing and maintaining the focus on the hospital's sustainability goals.  The ongoing education of hospital staff relative to these sustainability goals has been the key (and biggest challenge) to the success that Christ Hospital has achieved in energy comfort and cost efficiency improvements.

James Moler, PE, LEED AP BD+C, Turner Construction - As the largest builder of green buildings in the nation, Turner Construction is currently working on or has completed more than 200 LEED projects.  As the Turner Healthcare Division Sustainability Director, Mr.  Moler has over 40 years of industry experience in providing innovative HVAC solutions on mationally significant projects.  He is also a co-author of the Green Guide for Health Care and has presented at numerous national conferences including: ASHE PDC, ASHRAE's Indoor Air Quality Symposium, CleanMed 2006 and Healthcare Design 2007.  His sustainability concepts focus on how green healthcare facilities can intersect with key concerns at the hospital's executive level and how energy savings can impact bottom line revenue savings.

Ron Connovich, Community Mercy Health Partners
Ron, VP of Operations, is currently responsible for the design and construction of a new brownfield, 500,000 SF state of the art, Medical Center. Over his career he has completed over 3/4 of a billion dollars in healthcare construction and renovations.  He has been published on innovative infection control measures and has a passion for sustainable health care projects.  His success includes heat recovery, daylight harvesting, green roofs and some very innovative mechanical designs.  He will share his practical knowledge from an owner’s perspective of what works in green design as well as what doesn't and how to package it for Administrative/Board approval.

William J. Orosz, The Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC)
Administrative Director, Facility Planning and Development

Bill’s 30 year planning career includes professional service to over 90 healthcare organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada.  He was a partner in a Columbus architecture firm for 17 years, and has served on many local, state and national boards including the American Healthcare Executive Regents Advisory Council.  Bill is responsible for the planning and management of space for The OSUMC.  This includes: College of Medicine, OSU Physicians and the OSU Health System, comprising University Hospital, James Cancer Hospital, University Hospital East, OSU Harding, Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Hospital, Ross Heart Hospital and a network of care sites.

Lt. Col. Kevin W. Culp, WPAFB Medical Center
Lt. Col. Kevin Culp, USAF AFMC 88 AMDS/SGPB, MPH, CIH is an active duty Air Force bioenvironmental engineering flight commander assigned to the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center, where he provides occupational and environmental risk assessment support to the 27,000 employees assigned to the base.  He has 22 years of experience in the field of industrial hygiene and is board certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).  Lieutenant Colonel Culp's presentation will focus on protecting the health and well-being of the first pillar of sustainability, our people.

Thursday, October 14 is the Central Ohio Facilities Maintenance Expo to be held at the Fawcett Conference Center at The Ohio State University from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

Michael Berning will be presenting from 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM on Energy Conservation Strategies that Work!   The presentation will focus on an overall Process that Facility Managers and Building Owners can use to effectively concentrate their limited resources to greatly reduce energy and operational costs while improving the overall sustainability of their facilities. An actual Case Study example will highlight this Process as well as define the positive Return on Investment (ROI) that results from implementing energy and water efficiency improvements.
