Heapy Engineering provided Mechanical-Electrical Design, Commissioning, and LEED Program Management services for the renovation of the 97,800 SF existing building and 27,300 SF addition to the Old Columbus Police Headquarters located at 120 Gay Street.

The original building was constructed in 1929 and has six floors. The existing building was gutted of all Mechanical-Electrical systems, with the exception of main electrical gear and a steam boiler plant located in the basement, and abandoned piping and ductwork throughout the building. It was the intent of the Department of Finance and Management to renovate the Old Police Headquarters facility in order to better meet the needs of the citizens of Columbus.

The project included adding a glass canopy and glass exterior that expanded floor space for more offices—from 98,000 SF to 127,000 SF—and create more natural light to help reduce energy costs.

The project was completed in 2010 with a total construction cost of $31,693,000.
