Ashley U.S. Courthouse Modernization and Addition

Ashley US CourthouseHeapy Engineering is providing the MEP Design, LEED Consulting and SITES® Consulting for the modernization of and addition to the historic Ashley U.S. Courthouse in downtown Toledo.   This $104 million project allows GSA to upgrade the existing facility to meet modern Court requirements and construct a new 96,000 SF Courthouse annex.  The project will  accommodate Judiciary growth, provide enhanced security and improve the building's overall systems infrastructure.  The Design team consists of Schooley Caldwell and Smith Silver (Architects), Mannik Smith Group and Heapy Engineering.  Heapy is approaching the project using sustainable, energy efficient and high performance design principles for the building's MEP systems.  Cost effectiveness balanced with Energy Efficiency are central to these design parameters.  

The project is pursuing USGBC LEED® certification Version 4.  Heapy Engineering is providing all LEED® consulting services required to assist in obtaining the targeted Gold certification level.  Heapy Engineering is also providing consulting services to guide the project through the GBCI SITES®  version 2 certification rating system,  in order to obtain the target goal of SITES® Silver certification. 

After construction completion of the Annex, employees working in the 94-year-old Courthouse will move into the new annex, leading to a two-year renovation of the existing historic building.   The project includes upgrades to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and life safety systems, elevator replacement, accessibility upgrades, tenant improvements, façade repairs and roof replacement.  This modernization project is a pivotal undertaking in extending the life of the building and helping it remain a functional and viable asset. 

Regarding the project's pursuit of SITES® certification, SITES® is a systematic, comprehensive rating system designed to define sustainable sites.  SITES® provides the tools necessary to develop sustainable and regenerative project sites and provides a methodology to measure their performance, elevating the value of landscapes.
