Heapy Engineering is proud have been part of two recent projects at Bowling Green State University (BGSU)! Ribbon cutting ceremonies were held on October 1, 2016 for the new Greek Housing Village and the Michael & Sara Kuhlin Center (School of Media and Communications).
CBT Architects (Boston), commissioned Heapy Engineering to be the Criteria Design Engineer for the Mechanical-Electrical systems in the $37 Million Greek Housing Village. Heapy’s role included establishing parameters that led to significant energy savings and eventual LEED for Homes certification.
The university replaced existing fraternities and sororities houses with a townhouse-style development, involving a total of over 400 beds. All Greek Chapters are now housed in the new Greek Village.
Led by Champlin Architecture, Heapy Engineering provided the full Mechanical-Electrical and Technology Systems design for the 40,000 SF renovation and 8,000 SF addition of South Hall. Now named the Michael & Sara Kuhlin Center, it, is the new home for School of Media and Communications. With Heapy's energy efficient and cost effective design approach, (for example, using water cooled VRF systems), the project is projected to achieve a nearly 30 percent reduction in energy consumption! To provide 3rd Party verification of the sustainable and energy-focused design effort, the project is also pursuing LEED certification.
In order to meet today's fast-paced and digital based methodology to media and communications, Bowling Green State University knew their existing facility needed an improvement. The project included interior abatement, fully gutting the building, and the installation of new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire sprinkler systems and related equipment as well as thermal efficiency improvements to the building's exterior envelope, new windows and exterior doors.
Signature spaces in the new facility include a first floor media convergence lab, conference facilities, media effects lab, high-tech active learning classrooms, collaboration spaces, and improved facilities for BGSU's student media with cutting-edge audio and visual production facilities.
